About Is it possible to work in a research lab as a high school student

Is it possible to work in a research lab as a high school student?
I currently am shadowing a graduate student at a research lab, but I am annoyed that my schedule relies completely on his. I would prefer to work at a lab and get paid for it. However, it being almost july, I'm not sure if it's too late to find a position, and whether a position is even possible. I live around the University of Rochester. Thank you!

Great location. You didn't mention what type of research. I suggest that you go to your local work force office ( state employment office) and to the employment office of the local university to see if there are any openings. Do not be surprised if you will only be able to menial jobs as your age and experience will limit what you would be allowed to do. Please understand that most research labs have very stringent protocols to protect their results and funding. They cannot afford to let an untried, although enthusiastic, minor do much direct research. Also, they might accept some volunteer help, but paid positions are few and far between. On the other hand, look around town for an apprenticeship or volunteer program. Check out the veterinary clinics, humane society, hospital etc. Again, do not expect to be able to do any unsupervised work. There could be big liability issues. If you are interested in research, can you do some on your own? A few inventions and breakthroughs have started out in someone's garage or basement. What are you interested in researching? Maybe you can do some of your own experiemnts and learn from experience.
